Basic Information

In July of 2001, 29 charter members met and adopted the name, drafted a slate of officers, and formed a meeting plan for the Flint Hills Regional Quilt Guild.

Darlene Barr, Linda Crisp, Pat England, Marie HInderliter, Sherry Moore, Eileen Thornton, Maxine Horton and Helen Ericson were the backbone of this initial meeting.

The plan was to meet at the Extension Office Meeting Room at 618 Commercial in Emporia from 9:30 until 4:00 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Programs were scheduled for 12 noon to 1:00 p.m., and members were encouraged to bring a lunch and spend the day.

The first official meeting was held on September 11, 2001.  Members were told that business would be transacted at about 10:30 a.m, and time before and after the meeting and the program could be spent on sharing scraps and ideas, working on the Opportunity Quilt or a Service Project to be selected.

Members were encouraged to ask for help if they were having trouble with a pattern, technique or any other aspect of quiltmaking.

The first officers of the guild were:

  • Helen Ericson – President
  • Maxine Horton – Treasurer
  • Bernice Kelley – Secretary
  • Sherry Cook – Program Chair
  • Darlene Barr – Historian
  • Betty Commons and Sue Carpenter – Show Chairpersons
  • Linda Crisp – Newsletter Editor.

For several years an annual quilt show was held at the Flint Hills Mall or the Anderson Building on the Fair grounds.

In 2007, meetings were moved to the west campus of the Presbyterian Church when the Extension Office was closed.

The Founder's Quilt (shown right) was hand-quilted by Helen Ericsson.

Members created the individual blocks.

Over the years FHRQG membership has grown to 70 members and several community projects have been taken on.

We no longer do an annual quilt show, but we continue to help with the entry and display of quilts at the Lyon County Fair.

The Flint Hills Regional Quilt Guild was organized in July of 2001.

The purpose of the Guild is to preserve and encourage the art of quilting, to provide instructions for its members, education to the public, and to serve as an outreach organization through quilt related projects.

Members participate in a number of charitable activities, making quilts for Quilts of Valor and DCF foster children as well as lap robes, cover-ups and walker bags for rest homes.

Guild members enter quilts and help with the display of quilts for the Lyon County Fair.
